JANUARY’S InfoBYTE

Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.

This month’s InfoByte is all about the origin of the name "flexographic process."

In the 1940’s, the FDA’s classification of aniline dyes as unsafe for packaging did seemingly irreparable damage to printing sales. In an effort to revive the industry after the introduction of safe aniline dyes, the decision was made to rename the process so that there was no mention of the dye.

In 1951, the president of the Mosstype Corporation, Franklin Moss, asked the readers of his journal, the Mosstyper, to submit ideas for new names. The results were pared down to three choices: flexographic process, permatone process, and rotopake process. In a follow-up poll, the readers overwhelming chose the name "flexographic process."

Guardian PQV Defect Roll Mapping

Guardian PQV Defect Roll Mapping

Submitted to Labels and Labeling, Issue 5, November 2011

PC Industries offers Defect Roll Mapping on the Guardian PQV 100% Print Quality Verification system. This flexible, reliable, and easy to use software is designed to help improve your bottom line by detecting defects (such as registration shift, color change, or missing periods) early in the process, allowing for corrective action, and providing a true count of defect free labels.

On Press

As part of a Guardian PQV installed on the press, the Defect Roll Mapping system records defects by lane and footage for each roll. The press operator can compare the print to the master on the fly, then accept, reject, or even train the system to bypass that defect in the future – all without stopping the press.

Editing workstation

Defect Roll Mapping offers an extra step of quality control (QC) between the press and the slitter/ rewinder. An Editing Workstation can be connected to any Guardian PQV Roll Mapping system. Information from the press run can be edited, and an operator can accept or flag defects before they reach the rewinder. The productivity of the slitter/rewinder is improved by eliminating unnecessary starts and stops.

Slitter/ Rewinder

The Defect Roll Map Workstation interfaces with the machine to locate defects on the roll automatically. The slitter/rewinder presents the defects at the splicing table and allows for the operator to take appropriate corrective action.

Defect Roll Mapping is flexible enough to be used on any press or rewinder, or as an independent workstation, and is one of several features we offer you to help you achieve defect free rolls. To learn more about our Defect Roll Mapping system or any of our other inspection systems, contact us at +1.847.336.3300, or visit our website at 10.97.57.37/PCI-Local/.

This month, we’re proud to announce a new feature! The new "Introducing…" section will be showcase customer stories and some of the unique solutions we have engineered for their needs. This month, we will be featuring True Label Inc., a high quality pressure sensitive label manufacturer.

Finally, PC Industries is announcing our brand new website! Read on for more information.

Introducing…
True Label Logo

Recently, True Label Inc., a quality Ohio-based label manufacturer, replaced competitor’s equipment with multiple Guardian PQV 100% Print Inspection Systems with Defect Roll Mapping.

The Defect Roll Mapping module provides True Label Inc. the capability to record the position of print defects detected on the press. The Roll Map is then sent to the rewinder for automatic defect placement.

True Label has been running the Guardian PQV systems for nearly a year. We spoke with Bob Napierala, President, and Jeremy Michael, Production Supervisor, about their experience with the Guardian PQV and PC Industries. Their comments speak to the success of the project, not only in the quality and performance of product installed, but also in the level of customer service.

"The press operators are able to get jobs up and running faster, the auditors are able to edit rolls faster because the number of false errors has been reduced, and the Rewinders are able to rewind faster because of the systems accuracy of placing defects… PC Industries has been very open to any ideas we have for improvement. They have spent countless hours listening to our ideas… The tech support team at PC Industries is one of the main reasons we bought a 2nd system, and will buy a 3rd.  They take pride in their work and stand behind their product…" -Jeremy Michael, Production Supervisor

December’s InfoByte

Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.

This month’s InfoByte is about the early internet.

On August 6th, 1991, the internet’s first website was posted by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. It was designed with the intent to make computer stored information easier to access by physicists at CERN.

The groundwork for how we interact with the internet today was laid by Tim Berner-Lee, a physicist working at CERN. In 1980, Berner-Lee submitted his first proposal for a way to interact with the CERN network. It wasn’t until 1990 that the proposal was finally accepted. The results of the project? The first web browser, the first web server, and the first webpage.

Along with these, Berner-Lee also developed the URL formula, Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML, the language in which most webpages are coded, and Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP, which controls how computers get information from web servers.
