January Monthly Focus: Guardian LSI and GV-Spectro

PC Industries has announced the launch of two new products, the Guardian LSI and the Graphic-Vision® GV-Spectro. The Guardian LSI is PC Industries’ entry-level inspection solution, offering full web inspection on narrow web for typical defects, missing labels, unremoved matrix, and discrepancies between the web and a stored master image. The GV-Spectro combines absolute and ΔE color measurement and real-time reporting with our most advanced web viewing system yet for a powerful, inline solution.

To learn more about these systems, see below.

January 2015 InfoBYTE

Each month we present a new bit of trivia, some industry related, some not, that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.

This month’s InfoByte contains some facts about comets and the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Rosetta mission.

The Rosetta mission launched on March 2, 2004. Its primary mission was to rendezvous with comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). Of primary interest is the composition of 67P, as it may give us insight into the formation of the earth and conditions of the early solar system. Comets are relatively small, icy, rocky bodies thought to have formed in the outer solar system. When their orbit brings them close to the sun, the ice boils off and the comet tends to break up, giving them their signature tail, or coma. Some hypothesize that comets may have been responsible for bringing water to Earth during early impacts, and this mission was, at least partly, designed to gather data on that hypothesis.

On November 12, 2014, the ESA successfully landed Philae, the Rosetta space probe’s lander module, on the 67P. This mission marks the successful execution of many firsts for mankind, including:

  • First orbit of and controlled landing on a comet nucleus
  • First direct chemical analysis of a comet’s composition

Though Philae’s landing didn’t go as smoothly as hoped, the lander was still able to complete its main mission; photograph the comet’s surface, use its suite of instruments to gather data on the comet’s surface and subsurface composition, and return that data to Earth. Philae’s energy reserves were exhausted as it was finishing the data transmission, and it shut down 5 November at 00:36 UTC. The ESA hopes that the lander’s solar panels will be able to capture sunlight as the comet approaches the sun so its mission can continue.
