| JANUARY’S InfoBYTE |
Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s InfoByte is about crazy laws.
Many of these laws were established some time in the late 1800′s, when America was moving away from agriculture and toward industry, so whereas they may now seem slightly absurd, they probably did have their place. Many of these laws have since been repealed.
- • In Mohave County, Arizona, if anyone is caught stealing soap, he must wash himself with it until the soap is gone.
- • An old Colorado law states that a person mush have a doctor’s prescription before taking a bath.
- • In Kansas, when two trains meet at a crossing, “both shall come to full stop and neither shall start up again until the other has gone.”
- • In Kalispell, Montana, children must have a doctor’s note if they want to buy a lollipop.
- • In Eureka, Nevada, it is illegal for men who have mustaches to kiss women.
- • Policemen are allowed to bite a dog if they think it will calm the dog down in Paulding, Ohio.
- • In Zeigler, Illinois, only the first four firemen to arrive at a fire will be paid.
- • In Quitman, Georgia, chickens may not cross the road.

| JANUARY’S InfoBYTE |
Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s InfoByte is all about the origin of the name "flexographic process."
In the 1940′s, the FDA’s classification of aniline dyes as unsafe for packaging did seemingly irreparable damage to printing sales. In an effort to revive the industry after the introduction of safe aniline dyes, the decision was made to rename the process so that there was no mention of the dye.
In 1951, the president of the Mosstype Corporation, Franklin Moss, asked the readers of his journal, the Mosstyper, to submit ideas for new names. The results were pared down to three choices: flexographic process, permatone process, and rotopake process. In a follow-up poll, the readers overwhelming chose the name "flexographic process."

| Happy Holidays from PC Industries |
With winter closing in on the Chicago-land area, the employees of PC Industries are looking forward to the holidays and all the joy they bring. We would like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your families, and thank you for making this year a great year.

This month, we’re proud to announce a new feature! The new "Introducing…" section will be showcase customer stories and some of the unique solutions we have engineered for their needs. This month, we will be featuring True Label Inc., a high quality pressure sensitive label manufacturer.
Finally, PC Industries is announcing our brand new website! Read on for more information. |
| Introducing… |
Recently, True Label Inc., a quality Ohio-based label manufacturer, replaced competitor’s equipment with multiple Guardian PQV 100% Print Inspection Systems with Defect Roll Mapping.
The Defect Roll Mapping module provides True Label Inc. the capability to record the position of print defects detected on the press. The Roll Map is then sent to the rewinder for automatic defect placement.
True Label has been running the Guardian PQV systems for nearly a year. We spoke with Bob Napierala, President, and Jeremy Michael, Production Supervisor, about their experience with the Guardian PQV and PC Industries. Their comments speak to the success of the project, not only in the quality and performance of product installed, but also in the level of customer service.
"The press operators are able to get jobs up and running faster, the auditors are able to edit rolls faster because the number of false errors has been reduced, and the Rewinders are able to rewind faster because of the systems accuracy of placing defects… PC Industries has been very open to any ideas we have for improvement. They have spent countless hours listening to our ideas… The tech support team at PC Industries is one of the main reasons we bought a 2nd system, and will buy a 3rd. They take pride in their work and stand behind their product…" -Jeremy Michael, Production Supervisor

| December’s InfoByte |
Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s InfoByte is about the early internet.
On August 6th, 1991, the internet’s first website was posted by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. It was designed with the intent to make computer stored information easier to access by physicists at CERN.
The groundwork for how we interact with the internet today was laid by Tim Berner-Lee, a physicist working at CERN. In 1980, Berner-Lee submitted his first proposal for a way to interact with the CERN network. It wasn’t until 1990 that the proposal was finally accepted. The results of the project? The first web browser, the first web server, and the first webpage.
Along with these, Berner-Lee also developed the URL formula, Hypertext Markup Language, or HTML, the language in which most webpages are coded, and Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP, which controls how computers get information from web servers.

| November’s InfoByte |
Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s InfoByte is all about movable type.
Many people are familiar with the fact that Johannes Gutenberg is credited with inventing the modern movable type printing press around 1493. Over 400 years earlier, however, a Chinese alchemist named Bi (Pi) Sheng developed the first recorded movable type system using clay, an iron plate, and an adhesive made from pine resin, wax, and paper ash. Though useful, the system didn’t have nearly as much impact on Chinese culture as Gutenberg’s press did on the western world, possibly due to the thousands of unique characters that make up the Chinese language.

| October’s InfoByte |
Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s InfoByte is all about Belgium.
The Atomium: The centerpiece for the 1958 World Fair of Brussles, or Expo ’58, the Atomium is a 102 meter tall landmark that represents an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. Its engineer, Andre Waterkeyn, intended it as a symbol of the peaceful use of atomic energy. Though it was not intended to last past the Expo, its great reception secured its spot as one Belgium’s best known landmark. It currently houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to Expo ’58, rotating science themed exhibitions, and in the top-most ofs the monument’s 9 spheres, a panoramic view of Belgium. Learn more at Atomium’s Official Website.
Belgian Chocolate: Chocolate has been in Europe since it was brought over from America by Don Cortes in 1528. Belgium, however, was not recognized as a country until 1839. How did they become the authority on chocolate is so little time? In 1908, the Belgian king Leopold II gained possession of the Congo Free State (which became known as Belgian Congo until 1960). This gave the country nearly unlimited access to cocoa trees. Today, many Belgian chocolate makers still make their chocolates by hand. For more information on Belgian Chocolates, visit the Chocolate Expert. |

| Monthly Focus: Defect Roll Mapping |
PC Industries offers Defect Roll Mapping on every Guardian PQV 100% Print Quality Verification system. This flexible, reliable, and easy to use software was designed to help improve your bottom line by detecting defects early in the process.

Defect Roll Mapping records defects by lane and footage for each roll. The press operator can compare the print to the master on the fly, and accept, reject, or even train the system to bypass that defect in the future – all without stopping the press.
Defect Roll Mapping is flexible enough to be used on any press or rewinder, or as an independent workstation. To learn more about our Defect Roll Mapping system, or any of our inspection systems, contact us at 1.847.336.3300, or visit our website at www.pcindustries.com. |
| September’s InfoByte |
Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previos InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s trivia is about the barcode.
In June of 1974, the first U.P.C. scanner was installed at a Marsh’s supermarket in Troy, Ohio. The first item sold after being scanned with a UPC barcode was a 10-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit Gum, which is now on display at the Smithsonian. The first implementation of bar codes, however, was to label railroad cars.
You can read more about the history of the barcode on Barcode 1.

Chicago-land Power Outage
Last month brought us some interesting challenges. Strong storms rolled through our area, leaving us along with 650,000 other businesses and homes without power, some for up to 5 days. Our own disaster recovery plan had us back up and running only two hours after the power outage, with phones, computers, and everything but our AC running. We were able to operate close to normal, and still pulled through on all our projects.
Upcoming: New Website
PC Industries will be rolling out their new website soon! Look for it to get the most up-to-date information on all our products, including this month’s featured product, the Guardian PQV.
|
| InfoBYTE August |
This month’s InfoByte concerns the phrase "Out of Sorts."
An often used expression; "Out of Sorts," is proposed to have originated in the printing industry during the 17th century. A sort is a single letter or glyph in a typesetter’s case. A case often contained many copies of a letter so a typesetter could set large bodies of type at once. Running out of a sort would often create great irritation for the typesetter, leading to the phrases current use, to be upset, depressed, or in bad humor.
Of course, the history of this phrase is not 100% conclusive. For more information on this phrase, see World Wide Words. |

| July’s InfoByte |
InfoBytes are interesting bits of information from around the globe. This month’s byte is about the origin of the phrase "Mind your P’s and Q’s."
This phrase originated in shops working with movable type presses. The letters on the blocks used in these presses were reversed, such that they would read correctly when printed on paper. Because of this, several letters were often mixed up by printers’ apprentices, including p’s, q’s, b’s, and d’s. "Mind your P’s and Q’s" was a warning from the master to the apprentice to be sure that the tricky letters were properly sorted.
But, as is often the case with sayings like this, this isn’t the only proposed origin of the phrase. For other explanations, see World Wide Words |
