Each month we present a new bit of trivia that we call an InfoByte. You can check out previous InfoBytes in our newsletter archive.
This month’s InfoByte is all about the origin of the name "flexographic process."
In the 1940′s, the FDA’s classification of aniline dyes as unsafe for packaging did seemingly irreparable damage to printing sales. In an effort to revive the industry after the introduction of safe aniline dyes, the decision was made to rename the process so that there was no mention of the dye.
In 1951, the president of the Mosstype Corporation, Franklin Moss, asked the readers of his journal, the Mosstyper, to submit ideas for new names. The results were pared down to three choices: flexographic process, permatone process, and rotopake process. In a follow-up poll, the readers overwhelming chose the name "flexographic process."
